Post 01: A mid-century cast of 3D characters

Hello, and welcome to the show!

For over a century, people have devised ways to view images in as realistic a way as possible - for entertainment, for education, and for discovery. This site will not teach you about the art and science of stereoscopy but instead, will introduce you to the viewing devices that dutifully served in this endeavor.

I feel called to focus on the mid-century period, 1935 - 1965. There was a 2nd “birth” of 3D popularity and all sorts of interesting changes to the role of the 3D viewer - I’ll talk about this in future posts.

For now, I’m excited to bring them back to the stage, not necessarily to help us view anything through them, but to stand in the spotlight and be viewed themselves and tell us what they’ve seen. Some of them are old, their stories fragmented and that’s where audience participation (that’s YOU!) helps them deliver their grandest performance. You’re allowed to use your phone during this show! (Or your computer). Please share any history you remember.
