Unis-France Le Stéréotélescope

France, 1900s

This beautiful device was patented by Papigny and Mattey in 1903 and manufactured by Mattey. Similar to the Stéréo-Project viewer in our collection, it’s intended for viewing large projected stereoviews or stereo x-rays. However, unlike the Stéréo-Project, this one has adjustable interocular and focus. According to the Unis France catalog, the Stéréotélescope was “of particular interest to the medical world” and was “widely used in radiology." They claimed it was used by most Paris hospitals that needed to view 30x40 or larger stereoviews — this device saved them the time that would have been needed to reduce the size of the stereoviews.
