Cardboard was such a great 3D advertising vehicle — cheap, portable, fit for maximum graphics coverage, and lasts long enough to get the job done. In the late 1950s, Fort Pierce Industries, Inc. in Florida began producing the Stere-o-card. In 1959, the company president and plant manager was Sidney Van Tuyl who knew the potential of this three-dimensional device. At the Southern Medical Association’s 53rd annual meeting in Atlanta, Van Tuyl arranged for 300 doctors to receive Stere-o-Card viewers and cards with charts & stats to illustrate a medical talk being given by Dr. H. B. Goodwin, Jr. According to newspaper reports, “audience reaction to the device was excellent”. Ft. Pierce Industries wasn’t the only company to produce a cardboard viewer for multi-pair stereoview cards — Taylor Merchant and Tru-Vue also made them. However, from what we’ve seen, Ft. Pierce had the most extensive and consistent production of promotional and souvenir cardboard 3D viewers, covering clients from major automobile manufacturers, airline companies, food industries and amusement park venues. At some point — we’re not sure exactly when or why — the Stere-o-Card began being manufactured by Colorvision Industries in Ohio.
